FI12796.019 35mm Flicker test #1 (61-213) Shot under the camera. Various patterns and densities. In the last third of the roll, McLaren uses the flicker as we see in the unreleased Flicker Film, that is a series of fade-ins and fade-outs, which makes McLaren’s flicker different from those of his flickering compatriots like Tony Conrad, who based their flickers on alternating blacks and whites. In the last 100 feet there are two very interesting flickers, which I (Don McWilliams) wish McLaren had followed up. One is a pair of scissors pursuing and cutting up pieces of paper. The second is alternating photos e.g. photo of Grant Munro in make-up for Neighbours against white frames or patterns. Paul Sharits would explore a kindred idea in his colour flicker films.
