FI13027.033 Print of material from which McLaren would make the “Mad Ending” 750 feet. In the Mad Ending, Narcissus would writhe and swirl gradually sinking to the ground buried in multiple-Narcissus. It would have been a multi-optical pass scene. I (Don McWilliams) called it “Suddenly Last Summer”, a reference to the death of Sebastian in the movie version of Tennessee Williams’ play. Norman recognised the implication, and it made him uncomfortable. It was somewhat cruel of me; but the homosexual undercurrent in the film was something we never resolved, although we had open discussions about it. McLaren opted for the more generalised Prison ending, which, as critics pointed out, was a metaphorical ending that was too heavy. Personally, I wish we had used the Suddenly Last Summer or Mad Ending. It had potential.
