Norman recognised the implication, and it made him uncomfortable. It was somewhat cruel of me; but the homosexual undercurrent in the film was something we never resolved, although we had open discussions about it. McLaren opted for the more generalised Prison ending, which, as critics pointed out, was a metaphorical ending that was too heavy. Personally, I wish we had used the Suddenly Last Summer or Mad Ending. It had potential.
